Time has always been the motif of Carol LEE Mei-kuen’s art. Above the horizon, sunlight leaves traces of time on paper. Below the horizon, the primary soil stays hidden and unchanged by the passing centuries. Both testify to the building up and layering of time. Told by the Soil—Stories of Victoria II: Colour Mining showcases the artist’s continued exploration of primary soil. Carol sieved and ground the primary soil collected from Bonham Road, examined the colours it contained, and produced 100 different pigments. She also created a unique set of printmaking inks from these hard-won pigments and produced a series of relief prints.
