Print Art Contemporary, operated by Hong Kong Open Printshop, has evolved from a modest art collective in a walk-up tonglau building to Hong Kong’s leading graphic art organisation. We now operate from two locations: our established facility at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre and our new multi-purpose space at PMQ.

Open PressEstablished in 2021, Open Press preserves and celebrates the significant history of Hong Kong’s movable type and letterpress printing heritage. We maintain a comprehensive collection of artefacts related to the art and history of printing in Hong Kong, holdings include printing machines, type cases, and documents acquired from local pressmen and non-profit organisations. During our time at 404 Shanghai Street, we shared the stories behind this intangible cultural heritage through exhibitions, talks, guided tours, and workshops with the public. Following its success, our new location at PMQ connects with Central’s rich printing history while showcasing contemporary interpretations of movable type.

We will continue to uncover the hidden stories of “Hong Kong Type”—a set of Chinese lead types that originated in Hong Kong in the mid-19th century. At a time when there are no more type foundries in the city, we acquired a type founding workbench for demonstration, aiming to keep the art of printing alive.

Building on the legacy of the previous L8-06 gallery at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, we invite you to explore innovative exhibitions that celebrate artistic expression and research excellence.
Open StorePrint Art Contemporary has established a brick-and-mortar shop, Open Store, at PMQ, which sells limited edition prints by local young artists, past exhibition catalogues, and our own designed products, such as tote bags and masking tape. All proceeds from Open Store will be used for the daily operations of Print Art Contemporary. We sincerely invite the public to join us in strengthening the print art community in Hong Kong.

Print LabPrint Lab spans 4,000 square feet of professional workspace, providing comprehensive equipment, such as etching press, exposure unit, aquatint box, and acid ground bath, for print art lovers both locally and internationally to fully explore the medium through creation. Our printshop is organized into 4 specialist areas: Intaglio, Relief Printing, Planography, and Screenprinting. Since 2018, Print Lab has become a residency space for 16 local emerging artists.

ArchiveSince 2018, our archive has collected fine prints, zines, and printed ephemera generously donated by our past collaborators. These works of print culture not only form a vital repository of cultural and historical heritage, but also serve educational, archival, and research purposes. We welcome researchers to access our collections on-site by appointment.
